Luigi Spaventa is Chairman of Sator S.p.A. and Vice Chairman of Banca Profilo S.p.A.

He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, formerly Professor of Economics at the Universities of Palermo and Perugia, as well as Chairman of the board of MTS and member of the International Advisory Council of the Chinese Securities Regulatory Commission.

He is Trustee of the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) Foundation, the oversight body of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). He is Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research of London, and member of the Steering Committee of the Euro 50 Group.
Professor Spaventa was Chairman of the board of Capitalia Asset Management from 2006 to 2007, Chairman of CONSOB, the italian securities market regulator from May 1998 to June 2003 and Chairman of the board of Banca Monte dei  Paschi di Siena from May 1997 to 1998.

He served as Italian Minister of the Budget (april 1993 - may 1994), and as Chairman of the Treasury Advisory Committee on the management of public debt (1988-89); he was Member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament (1976-83).
Professor Spaventa was included in the “Group of Wise Men”, appointed by the ECOFIN to develop proposals for making the regulatory process of European securities markets more flexible, effective and transparent (Lamfalussy Committee, 2000-2001); as so, he co-authored the final report issued by the Committee.

He received a BA in Law at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and he spent two years of postgraduate studies at King’s College (Cambridge), where he passed the BA exams. He was Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford (1968-69), Visiting Scholar at International Monetary Fund in 1984, and Luigi Einaudi Professor at Cornell University in 1989.

Professor Spaventa published several books and articles, on corporate governance, ownership structure and investor protection, financial markets and European financial integration, on which he has also given several seminars. He co-authored various economic policy reports.  

He has been conferred upon the honour of "Cavaliere di Gran Croce” (Knight of the Grand Cross) of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
